Field Notes newsletter
When you choose to subscribe, we store your email address, the signup source, consent and signup time on our DigitalOcean server. Signing up is optional and separate from free downloads. New Field Notes signups request weekly learning notes and occasional course offers, with a separate unchecked adult/marketing consent box. Submission stores your request; it does not verify your age or mailbox, or automatically send a welcome email. Each edition is reviewed before sending; the launch edition is being prepared.
We use that address only for the communications you requested. Purchase email is not newsletter consent, and older product-update consent is not automatically extended to the weekly newsletter. We do not sell the list. Each signup confirmation includes an unsubscribe link; you can also use the form on this page.
Learning progress
The online companion records the lesson identifiers you mark complete, the course version and time against your verified purchase. It does not collect assignment answers or certify competence. Progress can be restored with your purchase email. We use aggregate progress to identify lesson friction, not to advertise to individuals.
Private support conversations
When you submit a contact request, we create a private, random support link valid for 90 days. We store a hash of its token, not the usable token, and the conversation and reply timestamps on the Academy server. Anyone with the link can read and follow up, so keep it private. No support-notification email is sent; save the link and return to check replies. Support may use AI-assisted drafting under periodic review; it is not a live chat or a guaranteed response time.
Contact requests
Our contact form stores the email and message you provide so the site owner can respond. Do not include passwords, payment card details or other sensitive information. It confirms receipt in the site’s database; it does not promise an immediate email reply.
Purchase email and passwordless access
Before buying, you provide the email used for transactional delivery and recovery. We store it with your order on our private DigitalOcean server. After verifying payment, we send the recipient address, a limited purchase description and a private access link to Resend for delivery. Resend processes this information under its privacy policy. We do not subscribe purchase emails to marketing. The noreply sender is not a monitored inbox; use our support form for help.
Recovery sends a limited-life, single-claim link only to the email recorded for an eligible paid purchase. We retain limited request and email-submission records for delivery, retries and abuse prevention. Email-provider acceptance is not proof of inbox delivery or that you read a message. Opening the private link gives access only after you press the confirmation button; email scanners do not automatically claim it. Once confirmed, this browser receives a necessary seven-day access cookie. No password or site account is created.
Payments
When checkout is available, PayPal processes payment details on its own secure page. We never store card numbers or bank credentials. To verify payment and deliver your files, we store the order reference, kit, amount, payment status, PayPal order/capture reference and payment timestamps. PayPal manages its own records under its privacy policy. Purchase data is separate from optional newsletter consent.
Purchase consent and delivery records
We record the terms version, consent time and the payment references needed to verify and support a purchase. Limited security and delivery records can include a salted network-identifier hash, time, order reference, file fingerprint and bytes served. A completed server response is not proof that a person read or used a file. These records are for delivery, abuse prevention and purchase disputes, not advertising. A restored access link is issued only after purchase verification.
Measurement & local tools
We record aggregate daily counts of page views, downloads, signup and checkout events. We do not create advertising profiles or tracking cookies. Standard static-page server logs may contain IP addresses and requested URLs for security and operations. Checkout and API access logs are disabled. The purchase flow uses a necessary Secure, HttpOnly session cookie lasting up to seven days to connect your checkout to delivery; it is not an advertising cookie. Our offer planner saves only on your device if you choose “Save on this device”. Calculator inputs stay in your browser.
Access or remove your data
Use the form below to request removal from the update list. For other data requests, use our contact form. We retain business records only while necessary for delivery, support or applicable recordkeeping requirements.
To prevent unauthorized removal, the email form records a removal request for the owner. Your signed unsubscribe link lets you confirm removal directly.
