Choose the product task and map the FBA responsibility
Understand the fulfilment service and write a research brief before opening a store or buying stock.
Fulfilment by Amazon is a service for eligible inventory: sellers send stock into the fulfilment network and Amazon performs covered storage and fulfilment tasks under its terms. The seller still needs to choose a suitable product, check permissions and requirements, fund inventory, prepare accurate listings and understand the account. Outsourcing fulfilment is not a guarantee of demand or profit.
This course begins with a fictional non-electrical desk organiser. The buyer needs to store pens and small stationery in a narrow workspace. The product brief names dimensions, material, contents, intended use, packaging and the target marketplace. We will evaluate a batch of forty units, but the number is a teaching cap rather than an advisable first order. All rates and cash timings in the worked batch are invented unless a fact is explicitly tied to a dated official source.
Draw the chain: research, exact-product verification, seller/product eligibility, supplier order, preparation, inbound shipment, receiving, available stock, customer order, returns and reconciliation. Give each step an evidence source and an owner. An item shipped to a fulfilment centre is not yet available for sale. A customer order does not immediately become money you can withdraw.
Choose a marketplace and identity basis before comparing requirements. Amazon's registration and product rules vary by circumstances. Check current official guidance for your actual business, location and product. This exercise does not create an account or determine geographic, tax or product eligibility. A request for documentation is a gate to resolve rather than an instruction to upload a substitute document.
Write a bounded research decision: what would justify obtaining more evidence, what would stop the product and what spending remains unapproved. Compare FBA with your own fulfilment using the same product and cost basis. FBA may solve fulfilment work while adding fees, storage and working-capital exposure. It is an operating choice to evaluate, not a universal upgrade over every selling method.
Worked example
Fictional brief: 40 stationery organisers, one marketplace, no electronics or claimed health benefit. Price hypothesis 24, supplier unit quote 5, dimensions unverified until sample check. Output: a product/economics brief and inventory rehearsal, not an activated listing. Stop if exact-model requirements, eligibility or funding cannot be resolved. The independent Academy is not Amazon and the course price includes no seller-plan fees.
Your exercise
Write the buyer task, exact-product brief and process map. Name at least five essential unknowns. Compare three alternatives including not selling the product. Record a time cap for research and a no-purchase gate until requirements, supplier and economics have been checked.
Your finished work
A product brief and responsibility map with an evidence-gated next action.
Check your work
- Fulfilment and seller responsibilities are distinct.
- One product and marketplace are defined.
- Invented inputs are labelled.
- The exercise requires no account or stock purchase.
